Stars of the week

Ryan Prentice , Mount Rainier boys cross country

Prentice, a senior, completed an amazing comeback for the school from Des Moines by winning the Class 3A state championship. He missed a major chunk of the season after being attacked by a pit bull in August. Despite the lack of training, Prentice pulled off the big victory, covering the 3.1-mile course in Pasco in 16 minutes, 1 second.

Olivia Thomas , King’s girls cross country

Thomas, a junior, lived up to some high expectations and won the Class 1A state title after placing second last year. She toured the 3.1-mile course in 19:16 and helped the Knights from Shoreline defend their team title as four of her teammates placed in the top 30.

Nathan Hale football team

The Raiders, coached by Hoover Hopkins, beat Kennedy of Burien 21-14 to advance to the first round of the state playoffs for the first time since 1980. Nissim Shulman scored the winning touchdown on a 55-yard catch-and-run with 54 seconds left in the game.

Stars of the week are selected by The Seattle Times staff and published Tuesdays, but can be chosen only once each sports season. Nominations may be e-mailed by Sunday night to sports@seattletimes.com with name, school and accomplishments.
